The
last week of June brought heavy rains and devastating flooding to many
communities in central New York. Two of our CB Mission Northeast churches
received significant damage due to the flood waters. These two churches along
with other CB churches are also helping church families and their communities
cope with their losses.
Unadilla
Baptist and First Baptist of Sidney have sustained damage to their church
facilities and parsonages. Both churches have completely gutted their church
basements which housed Sunday School rooms, nursery, fellowship hall,
kitchen, and rest rooms. The parsonage basements were flooded. The first floors
of the parsonage and Mission House in Sidney were flooded as well. It is
uncertain if the heating systems in both the churches and parsonages will be
salvageable.
It
appears the damage will not be covered by the churches’ insurance. Although
the facilities in Sidney had working sump pumps, the power company cut power
to the area because of the flooding.
In
addition to the structural losses, both churches have lost equipment and
supplies. Both pastoral families have been living in temporary housing. The
congregations used nearby churches to hold services last week and will
continue to do so this week. It is not known when they will be able to hold
services in their own facilities.
CBAmerica sent a check to each of these churches from the
ACTs Fund to provide some initial help, but more assistance
will be needed by the churches and those they are trying to serve.
Hancock
Baptist Church in Hancock, NY received minimal damage to their facility, but
they have become a Red Cross distribution center to their hard hit community.
All
three churches have church members who have suffered great loss. As more
information and needs are known we will post information on our website.
Please pray that the Lord will give strength to the pastors and churches in
this time of crisis and that through this devastation many will find help and
salvation through Christ.
Please
consider a special offering for these needs and mark your gift Central NY Flood. Send your gift to CB
Mission Northeast, PO Box 441, Nassau, NY 12123. If you are able to arrange
work crews to help please contact CBMNE. We look forward to the many ways the
Lord will work through our churches helping churches in this time of need.
